Product Description

Imagine you shrank to the size of a penny and walked around outside. You might see a river of ants, a swooping dragonfly scooping up a mosquito, or a buzzing bumblebee hovering over a flower, sipping sweet nectar. You might even see a twig staring back at you with its eyes. And if you look closely, you'll see the world transform before you into a busy, bustling domain of insects. "What would I see if I looked really closely?" asks Caterpillar. Join Caterpillar on its journey through the insect world, discovering fascinating facts, leading to one huge -- and transformative -- discovery about itself. Ages 3 to 8. Full color picture book. Hardcover with dust jacket. 8-3/4" wide x 11-1/4" high. 32 pages.

David Opie holds a BFA and MFA in Illustration and lives with his wife in Connecticut. His previous books, All the Birds in the World and All the Fish in the World have received multiple positive reviews.

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-4
Close to 200 different insects are depicted in fine detail in this caterpillar's-eye view of the insect world. A soon-to-be transformed monarch caterpillar plays narrator to information about a vast array of crawling, flying, and swimming insects from different habitats. Included in the text is a brief history of the insect world, simple descriptions, information about the life cycle, and a more detailed view of the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into a monarch. (The illustrations focus on the outer appearance of the insects and do not include a diagram of body parts, though these are described in the text.) Visually appealing scenes of blue skies, colorful flowers, and brown dirt provide a good contrast to the bugs, beetles, and butterflies scattered across the pages. The text is aimed at confident readers, but there are plenty of images to keep younger children engaged, with each insect identified by name in the back of the book. Back matter includes an author's note, glossary, more information about monarch butterflies, and a detailed and numbered identification key to the featured insects. A fine addition to any library's collection about the natural world. Sue Morgan
