Francisco Correa de Arauxo's surviving music is entirely contained in his Facultad organica of 1626. Published in Alcala under the composer's own direction, it is one of the largest and most significant works in the history of the organ. His compositions feature a wide range of characteristics, some rational and well-structured, others mystical and eccentric. Correa intended his works to be played in meantone temperament—the normal tuning system at the time for organs, which is the tuning used in these recordings. Robert Bates is an award-winning, internationally recognized recording artist, recitalist, composer, and a specialist in early French and Spanish organ music. His recordings include Viaticum, which contains eight of his compositions, as well as the Complete Organ Works of Jehan Titelouze. His live performance for the National Convention of the American Guild of Organists is available as In Recital at Lagerquist Hall. He is a Professor at the Moores School of Music, Houston, Texas, and previously served as University Organist at Stanford University, where he received his Ph.D. in Musicology. The CD set includes a 120-page booklet with a rich selection of full-color photos, descriptions (including specifications) of the five instruments, and a brief essay on historical Spanish and Mexican organs. The collection has been praised for its contribution to the culture of early Iberian keyboard music and its documentary and instructional value.
