Homo sapiens. We scream at athletic events until our voices are
hoarse, we slur our words together during everyday speech and expect listeners to comprehend our utterances, and we continually hurt others through slanderous words. Even with this copious vocal exercise, very few of us understand either the mechanics or the structure of human speech. Our daily aural assaults are a prime illustration of this ignorance.
Even through all of this oral obfuscation many of us strive to extend our own speech. Our reasons for using an artificial voice are varied. A practical reason could be to record a response for a telephone answering machine. A personal reason is possibly to create a synthetic companion. Until recently, the solution to this quest for a disembodied voice has been in magnetic recording media. All you had to do was turn on your porta- ble tape recorder and spend several minutes composing a verbal "let- ter" to Grandma or making vocal notes about a college lecture. This application was both inexpensive and easy, but there were limitations. For example, once you recorded the phrase "Dear Grandma" on tape, that message remained unchanged until the tape was erased. Therefore, you were unable to make a "boilerplate" message that would satisfy all of your relatives. In this case, each relative would have to be separately addressed and a new message recorded. What you needed was a more versatile method to reproduce your voice... "
