From Booklist
Ages 5^-9. This picture book celebrates America's diversity as a nation of immigrants, including a history that is inclusive. The illustrations depict folksy culture, beads-and-feathers costuming, festive foods, and holiday togetherness. The narrative begins with the first nomads, the American Indians, and acknowledges that Indians were later displaced from their land. It also notes the forced arrival of millions of Africans to the Americas as slaves. The book describes the waves of people who have come through the centuries: their reasons for leaving home, their journeys, their hopes, their settlements, and how today's immigrants continue to arrive in search of a better life. The history of American immigration is portrayed as one of determination and struggle, but also hope and the desire to contribute to the nation.
Product Description
Thousands of years ago, the first people to arrive on American soil traveled across a land bridge from Asia to what is now Alaska. With millions already settled when Christopher Columbus "rediscovered" America in 1492, news about the "new" world spread, leading to more arrivals. The trans-Atlantic journey was long and arduous, but by 1700, colonies of various European nations had been established. This expansion, however, took a toll on the native people and Africans forced into slavery. By the mid-1800s, the volume of immigrants led to the opening of an immigration office on Ellis Island. Despite laws passed in the early 1900s to limit arrivals, immigrants still come from countries worldwide, including Russia, Haiti, and Cuba, in pursuit of a better way of life.
From Publishers Weekly
Maestro (The Discovery of the Americas) offers an overview of U.S. immigration, covering extensive ground without oversimplifying. Each reader is made a part of the story, with the arrival of the first Americans many thousands of years ago highlighted, and the millions of inhabitants present by the time of Columbus' arrival. The book describes the many waves of settlers from European countries, the slave trade, the inspection at Ellis Island, and the ongoing stream of refugees who seek shelter in the U.S. Ryan's (Darcy and Gran Don't Like Babies) watercolor art portrays the anxiety and exhilaration of the individuals depicted. Ages 5-9.
