"The ancient Mayas occupied a large part of Guatemala and of British Honduras, the western portions of Salvador and Honduras, almost the whole of the Mexican states of Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche and Yucatán, and the Territory of Quintana Roo. As marked climatic and physiographic contrasts occur within this vast area, the action between man and his environment, as also human relations and even certain cultural developments, were necessarily conditioned by the influence of at least three great natural zones, although it would not be possible to define their precise boundaries (Cf. Fig. 3).

These three vital zones of the Maya world are the Northern Zone, in other words the Peninsula of Yucatán; the Central Zone, which can be described as including the Petén district of Guatemala and the rivers and lagoons of the Gulf coast; and thirdly, the Southern Zone, comprising the highlands of Guatemala and the adjoining areas."
