In "Memoirs of a Parrot", readers ages 5 to 8 will follow a parrot as he navigates life in a pet store and then with a new owner. Devin Scillian's original story is complemented by Tim Bowers' comedic illustrations, making for a highly recommended addition to picture book collections.

The story centers on Brock the parrot and his new life with his owner, Todd. Brock and his friend Tik Tok, another parrot, discuss communication styles of different animals in Wilbur's Pet shop. Brock is frustrated with customers who misunderstand him, while Tik Tok enjoys the attention. When Todd enters the shop, he tries to connect with Brock, who is surprised to learn he could be purchased.

Todd eventually takes Brock home, where Brock hopes for a rainforest but finds an apartment and a ukulele-playing owner. Brock is unimpressed with the crackers offered and refuses to speak Todd's language. After some time, Todd returns Brock to the pet shop, where Brock vents to Tik Tok. Despite a comfortable cage and toasted crackers, Brock is unwilling to bond with Todd.

As days pass, Todd's attention wanes, and Brock remains silent. A turning point comes one night involving a cracker and a toaster, which may just change their relationship.
