She explores the marvels of Toltec and Aztec culture and visits the ruins of these ancient Indian civili-zations. She describes the plays of Cervantes being performed in the streets at Guanajuato, an enchanting sixteenth-century town in Central Mexico, and wonders at the fabulous beauty of the old Spanish haciendas. In remote Indian villages she sits with potters and weavers at work, sees guitars being made by hand, goes down a silver mine and then watches the silver beaten into beautiful necklaces. Mexico is a land of exotic contrasts, not least of which are the flowering of the hot desert country of the north after the
"rainy season', and the blossoming and fruiting of the fantastic cacti.
